The Curious Case of Kotakoti

Many mothers are thankful that their teen daughters haven’t ended up as the next star of MTV’s “Sixteen and Pregnant.” But what if your daughter’s hobby was just downright creepy, regardless if she smoked meth or got knocked up in the backseat of a Chevy?

Personally, I don’t know which one is worse – a 16-year-old mother, or a 16-year-old who enjoys dressing up as a human doll. A weird new trend has taken Japanese teenagers by storm, and is quickly working its way to the States. More and more teenage girls are dolling themselves up like actual porcelain dolls, wearing frilly babydoll dresses, contact lenses to give them Bambi-doe eyes, ribbons, and braids.

Take London based teen Venus Palermo for instance. At 15,  she seems to have grown into her doll obsession rather than out of it. Posing under the screen name VenusAngelic, Venus posts YouTube tutorials for others girls who want to look like her. But this isn’t what makes her super creepy. It’s the fact that she makes herself up to be a living doll.

According to Venus, all it takes to become a modern ball-jointed doll (or BJD, as she calls it) is enlarged pupil contacts, like the ones Lady Gaga used in her video , white eye-shadow and plastic-sheen-effect powder.

Not only does she teach viewers to do their hair and makeup like dolls, but she also coaches them on how to resemble unicorns and wide-eyed, submissive puppies. And she does all this while giving you play-by-play instructions with her eerie, Harajuku little kid voice.

Another example of girls gone wild for dolls is the case of Dakota Rose, aka Kotakoti on YouTube. This petite, fawn-like girl, claiming to be 16, also gives beauty tutorials to fans. Dakota is seen as the embodiment of perfection, gaining widespread popularity in Japan and other parts of the world. But, according to internet rumors and circulating pictures, her perfection isn’t even real.

Report after report after report is revealing that Dakota has Photoshopped all of her videos and pictures before posting them online. She has not only made her eyes appear huge, but her chin, lips and face appear smaller and her breasts triple in cup size.

She’s also not 16, but really 19 years old.

Some of you may be thinking, Well, who the f!@k cares? Fashion magazines do it all of the time. Plus, she’s 19. She can make her boobs the size of small continents, with or without Photoshop.

That’s not the point. The point is that she’s posing as a 16-year-old Lolita, sexualizing herself as a young girl and teaching others to do the same.

And that’s just sick and really, really wrong.

Dakota happens to be the younger sister of scenequeen Kiki Ostrenga, who was a YouTube sensation at just 14 and featured in a Rolling Stone editorial last year. Due to her unexpected rise in internet stardom, Kiki suffered bullying, stalking, and was even raped by her 20-year-old boyfriend.

Now, after your first daughter was raped at such a young age due in large part to her YouTube fame, why on earth would a girl’s parents let her younger sister do the exact same thing?!?

And that’s where I start to criticize our society’s obsession with fame.

Venus’s mother, Margaret Palermo, doesn’t seem to be weirded out or even concerned that her daughter is dressed like a huge doll. Margaret is quoted on the UK iTV show Daybreak as saying:

‘I  would be horrified if she came home pregnant, I am not horrified if she is innocent and good girl who likes cute clothes and frills and ribbons.’

‘I am absolutely fine with that, her face is already doll-like and if she likes the style I am fine with it, I would be more worried if she came home drunk or smoked.’

Really, woman?!? REALLY????????

I feel that Venus and Dakota’s parents are hoping to win the same fame and fortune that Justin Bieber did thanks to his YouTube success. And if that means putting their teenagers in harm’s way and setting a bad example for other impressionable teens, then so be it.

  1. I don’t see anything wrong with dressing yourself the way you like it. If you want something like this it’s fine too. The only think I hate about venus is that she live up to be a doll, THAT is being obscessed. I myself like cute clothes, I would only wear lolita or doll clothes in cons but I like dresses but normal ones, she doesn’t attend school too, her mother think that is fine? Being homeschooled excludes her even more from living with people, REAL people… I like a little bit more dakota since she is pretty “normal” but she did lie A LOT, but at least she talks normaly not like a total idiot child… But some of her clothes are a little provacative.. I don’t like this ones.

    • just being me and giving my own opinion .

well lets see compared to Dakota and Venus , Venus is more honest of her self and Dakota lied to millions of people and gave false hope to others plus she lied about her age. Please give me more info on why you dislike Venus more than Dakota thanks .

  2. I like that cute style, but living to be a doll is just pretty sick. From some girls in my school, i heard about this ‘kotakoti’ and googled her and apparently she isn’t anything like those videos. That’s just plain pathetic, Venus is at least honest, I mean she is pretty sick (trying to be a doll) but at least not fake.

you are totally right i also googled kotakoti and found out she is not like she seems in her photos and you tube vids i guess people will soon found out the truth since their was already suspicious that she was rather fake . I also think Venus is way more honest then kotakoti which her real name is Dakota rose . What makes me somewhat surprised is that Dakota( now i’m using her real name ) got to japan for free and even got to be signed in an modeling agency( because they thought she was real ) but she got embarrassed in front of millions of people ( i guess her lies got caught up to her.) Maybe she somehow wanted to be beautiful in every one’s eyes i mean she is already pretty so why be fake ? only Dakota and her makeup will know.

  3. Every little girl grows up w/ dolls as the epitome of perfect beauty. So what’s sick about wanting to look like a doll? That they want to be beautiful? What’s sick is dakota using computers to edit her image and then pretending she doesn’t. If Venus thinks beauty has to be a woman/child she’s as sick as a pedophile!

    • just being me and giving my own opinion .

girl i agree with you on that . i also agree that there has always been a little girls dream to beautiful but in my opinion some how they have to accept the fact that is rather impossible to be just perfect there are always going to a be a flaw in them no matter what ( unless ahem Photoshop but that just being fake and giving people false hope and going to unhealthy and physical extremes – not the best role model for them .)

      • just being me and giving my own opinion .

wait i don’t understand on the part of Venus being as sick as a pedophile . is Venus saying woman and child should being together together ? or being mixed like being a woman but behaving like a child ?

  4. I am into the human doll look and there nothing wrong with it i mean it encourages young women to cover up and be cute not sexy and yes some of these girls are bitches but honestly its harmless

    • just being me and giving my own opinion .

are you into the extreme look as to go as far as to get surgery ? yeah it is somewhat harmless but not entirely there are always consequences with the choices you make in your life .

  5. I don’t see why people call these girls ‘sick’ and ‘creepy’. In our over-sexualized society, all they want is to hold onto their youth and continue to dress in lace and ribbons- like teenage girls used to. And anyone that thinks this is a sexual thing is clearly just a pervert themselves, turning cute clothes into something erotic.
Also, dolls are modeled off of humans and are made to be perfect so all those girls are just doing what all girls do, it’s just that this trend isn’t popular in Western culture. The only difference between porcelain dolls and the Barbie that most girls try to imitate is that porcelain dolls look cute and innocent. It’s not as if these girls actually want to be a child’s toy, they just want to look doll-like.
Haven’t people always likened youthful girls to dolls anyway? As in “She’s such a doll”.

  6. You say nothing is wrong with it, but BOTH Venus and Kotakoti and some specific other girls SEXUALIZE themselves, while trying to look “Lolita,” which isn’t healthy for themselves and older men/women.
Venus’s video titles and thumbnails are provocative. One of her video titles are, “They’re huge!” with a angled shot of her face and chest, leading pervs to automatically click.
Kota’s pictures feature her cleavage, while looking at the camera with big, edited innocent eyes, making her look “young” but “sexy.” Which isn’t okay if you ask me.
You can dress how you want to and try to look a certain way, IF IT’S SAFE FOR EVERYONE’S HEALTH. You ignorant people.
If you like to be a dark teen who is into torture, and would be willing to do it in real life, is that okay? Is it okay to kill neighborhood dogs and cats and pin their corpses onto your wall because it’s who you are? Hell no.
Sorry for the extreme examples, but I hope I made my point clear.

    • And what about girls who look very young naturally? I’m 22 years old and people often say “Wow, I thought you were 15!” And I’ve always been told (since I was a little girl) I have a porcelain doll face because my eyes are big, I have red hair, and I’m very pale. If I want to dress sexy, am I doing something wrong because I naturally look young?

These girls aren’t doing anything wrong. It isn’t up to them to police society. They are age appropriate. Stop being judgmental and worry about the girls who actually BEHAVE promiscuously. The girls getting knocked up when I went to high school weren’t the ones who dressed liked dolls, they were the ones who dressed OLDER than they are.

  7. If i have to say comparing to venus with Dakota. Its a huge comparison.venus is still a child whom in teenage of age.evrygirls at her age is alright to act cute.while dakota omg turning 21 in 2014. Oh come one forever 14 /15
Wake up dakota!!! Evryone deserve to be cutie if u just act normal.

  8. Her lifestyle is not the only kind that involves women sexualizing themselves online. Her mother has a point and is more accepting and tolerant than you are. It’s her own lifestyle choice,
